We’re just a short walk from the beach, so you can start your mornings with the ocean and wind down your evenings with a sunset stroll along the Esplanade. A Coles supermarket is only a five-minute walk away, and you’ll also be close to local cafes, shops, and everything you need during your stay. Hervey Bay itself is known as the gateway to K’gari (Fraser Island) and one of the best places in the world for whale watching, making it a must-visit destination for travellers exploring Australia’s East Coast.

Whether you’re travelling north or south, Hervey Bay is the perfect place to slow down, recharge and experience a different side of the Queensland coast.

It’s the world’s first whale heritage site and one of the world's best whale watching destinations!
From July to October, thousands of humpback whales stop in the calm waters of Hervey Bay during their migration. The sheltered bay provides ideal conditions for close encounters, making it one of Australia's premier whale-watching locations.Beyond whales, you may also spot Dolphins, Sea turtles and Dugongs. -

Unlike busier East Coast destinations such as Noosa or Airlie Beach, Hervey Bay has a laid-back coastal feel. It’s an excellent place to recharge, with a long waterfront esplanade, uncrowded beaches and plenty of cafés overlooking the ocean. If you’re travelling between Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Whitsundays, Hervey Bay is an ideal place to break up your journey while experiencing one of Australia’s most beautiful coastal regions. -
Most backpackers spend 2–3 days in Hervey Bay, giving them enough time to relax, explore the Esplanade, enjoy the beaches and experience the town’s laid-back coastal atmosphere.
If you’re planning to visit K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) or go whale watching during the migration season (July to October), we’d recommend staying 4–5 days. This gives you enough time to enjoy these unforgettable experiences without feeling rushed.
Many travellers also use Hervey Bay as a chance to slow down between busier East Coast destinations. Spending a few extra days here lets you recharge before continuing your journey north or south.
